Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade Quilt Project, Schwenksville Elementary 2014Each student sewed their block and added their own art work.

Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade Quilt Project, Schwenksville Elementary 2014Each class was given a different fabric, and I assembled the quilt top. The quilt was returned to the school on a rack for knotting. As part of The Colonial Fair, a station was set up for the knotting. Then the quilt is returned to me for the binding.

Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade Project (Part 1)

2014 marks my 16th year of volunteering in Perkiomen Valley School District, helping with the 5th Grade Quilt Project. Previous years can be found at  Magic Touch & Her Community Service. This year I will be doing posts on the process for The Schwenksville Elementary School Quilt. Part 1 details the design process.

It all starts with a Theme.

Schwenksville Elementary 2014: Dr Seuss

Class Count: 4 classes, averaging 24 Students each

The Plan:

This is the (rough) sketch I did to design the quilt. I think we can do it!

The fabric.

Dr Seuss Fabric @ Joann

RJ Reynolds Fabric has a Dr Seuss series which Joann Fabric carries. Now to locate it in a store near me…

This years quilt will be an Art Quilt. The students will be using their artistic talents to draw on a square, or triangle, which will be 1/2 of their block. They can chose from their favorite Dr Seuss book: a quote, a character, or a title. I always look forward to seeing their finished block…

If I do a Block, this quote would be my choice.

Dr Suess Quotes Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade projectWonder if I would be able to fit it all in…

Off to find the fabric.

 My Quilts are Handmade….

These quilts are made to enjoy. They are comfortable. They are constructed with 100% cotton front and back. Sewn with cotton thread. Hand knotted with cotton string. I use 4-ounce polyester batting. I like the lighter weight, it doesn’t bunch, and it keeps you warm and cozy.

My quilts are machine pieced with the best machine ever. It holds up to me!
Each quilt is hand knotted, which is a very old technique. I do not hand quilt them, that just takes too long. I have the attention span of a gnat.
The binding is attached to the front by machine and hand sewn to the back.
They are machine-washable. The dye used in fabric-making seem to hold up much better than it used to. But you do need to remember cotton is a natural fiber.

It all started with a pattern, Controlled Chaos…

Controlled Chaos. www.TheQuiltCabine.comShown in Black and White Ombre

I developed this pattern a few years back. Since, I have secured a Patent. Wow!

With this pattern I am able to create Quilts for all seasons, for all reasons…

The pattern allows me to go from Contemporary…

TheQuiltCabinet Contemporary

Choosing the right fabric makes all the difference. Here I took a Victorian fabric and pulled the gray and black to create Contemporary!

To Traditional….

TheQuiltCabinet My Personal Quilt

This is a Quilt with an incredible story. My first Controlled Chaos. My Favorite. It has been on my bed for many years…and it travels with me…Oh the places it has gone…If Quilts could talk…I would be in trouble for sure…LOL..

The fabrics I chose lend a Traditional feel, the subtle colors have looked tea stained since day one. Quilting cotton allows a comfort like none other. This quilt was made w/o batting (Summer Quilt) and has provided me w/a soft place to fall. It is Machine Quilted…
