Magic Touch & Her Barefoot Garden

The Barefoot Garden is the first Community Garden inspired by Re-Establishing Roots.

It is comprised of a Community of Friends.

Magic Touch & The Barefoot GardenCommunity Gardens come in all shapes and sizes, from neighbors sharing their crop, to a full fledged CSA, all the way to the Edible Forest, which provides food for all…

First up: Inspiration

The Barefoot Garden is the first Community Garden inspired by Re-Establishing Roots.

Re-Establishing Roots for a Healthful Community through Gardening.

Our Community is comprised of friends. We are pulling resources to produce nourishing food without using chemicals.

Planning:

Waiting for the snow to melt took the longest. Went out and measured the area, and there is enough room to install a Garden 21′ X 21′, 441 square feet of Garden. The Garden is in full Sun. Zone 6.

Plotting:

Fencing:

Our fence will be a simple Kennel Fence supported by 4″ X 4″ fence posts with metal post placed midway along the sides. Tent pegs will further secure the fence to the ground.

Make sure you check with your Local Municipality for  permitting requirements.

In Pa we must notify Pa One Call.

Supplies: shovel, posthole digger, level, square, string, measuring tape, cement to secure post, and muscle (My son Michael provided the muscle.)

We chose Kennel Fence, 48″ high.

Soil: Our choice will be to add Mushroom Soil and Peat Moss. We will till the area, add the compost and re till. We will be using Composting holes throughout the Garden to provide ongoing Nourishment. Plants: We will be planting Veggies, Herbs, and Flowers. A Garden for all Seasons. Harvest: Harvesting will be done along the way as the plants Magic Touch will be doing a Veggie Garden in 2014 for the first time ever...Planning is the key. I have gathered together friends who will be helping with The Barefoot Garden. In turn, they will be getting Tomatoes! And then we need to clear up those Gardening tips which only add to the confusion of The Novice Gardener...Like myself... Check out Gardening Wives' Tales for more info...We will be re-purposing an old door for the gate. Check out the DIY Garden Gate, The Barefoot Garden

Starting with a blank slate

Putting it down on paper

Removing sodThe Barefoot Garden, planning, plotting and execution. A Community Garden of Friends…Cut the sod with a shovel. I cut every 6″ loosening it along the way. After I had each plot done I then removed the sod.

The Barefoot Garden, planning, plotting and execution. A Community Garden of Friends…The sod along with the soil was piled up outside the garden.

Plots are done.

Our delivery has arrived

The Barefoot Garden, planning, plotting and execution. A Community Garden of Friends…Delphi Supply is our local hardware store.

The Barefoot Garden, planning, plotting and execution. A Community Garden of Friends…3 cubic yards of Mushroom Soil and 3 bales of Peat Moss.

Once you determine the square footage, you can use a Landscape Calculator to determine how much product you will need.

PH matters. The mix I have chosen should provide a neutral PH. I will be getting the soil tested to ensure the PH.

We will be using Composting holes throughout the Garden to provide ongoing Nourishment..

Magic Touch & Her Compost Holes provides the details.

Now it is time to get to work…

The Barefoot Garden, planning, plotting and execution. A Community Garden of Friends…

For the 4X 4 plot, I added 10 gallons of mushroom soil and peat mixed, 2/3 to 1/3. Turned over 8″ of soil.

And there you have it…

We are ready to plant…Onions first….

Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade Project (Part 1)

2014 marks my 16th year of volunteering in Perkiomen Valley School District, helping with the 5th Grade Quilt Project. Previous years can be found at  Magic Touch & Her Community Service. This year I will be doing posts on the process for The Schwenksville Elementary School Quilt. Part 1 details the design process.

It all starts with a Theme.

Schwenksville Elementary 2014: Dr Seuss

Class Count: 4 classes, averaging 24 Students each

The Plan:

Dr Seuss Hat Quilt sketch Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade Project

This is the (rough) sketch I did to design the quilt. I think we can do it!

The fabric.

Dr Seuss Fabric @ Joann

RJ Reynolds Fabric has a Dr Seuss series which Joann Fabric carries. Now to locate it in a store near me…

This years quilt will be an Art Quilt. The students will be using their artistic talents to draw on a square, or triangle, which will be 1/2 of their block. They can chose from their favorite Dr Seuss book: a quote, a character, or a title. I always look forward to seeing their finished block…

If I do a Block, this quote would be my choice.

Dr Suess Quotes Magic Touch & Her 5th Grade projectWonder if I would be able to fit it all in…

Off to find the fabric.
